NBC Universal Studio Operations has a fantastic, content rich website that describes and promotes their studio facilities.  To further improve their site, NBCU wanted to streamline it for location scouts, producers and directors touring the backlot.  This was accomplished by auditing the primary website for the most relevant content and redesigning it for mobile displays.  The site puts all the most important information at the finger tips of filmmakers while keeping their other hand free to steer the golf cart.  Fire up your BlackBerry or iPhone browser today and have a look!

If you attend any Digital LA events, there will be a good chance you’ll bump into some of us friendly folks from Tuesday.  The most recent session was at the Roosevelt Hotel and centered around representatives across Disney, including Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Disney Interactive Media Group, Disney-ABC Television Group and Walt Disney Studios. The focus of the panel was to discuss Disney’s initiative of franchise development over multiple platforms and how their specific business extends products through channels like online, gaming, mobile, consumer products and theme parks. They openly discussed their challenges and areas that do not make sense to explore even though they are hot items at the moment. For example, Facebook does not make sense when you are targeting children who are not on Facebook. After the discussion, the panel fielded questions for another 45 minutes and talked openly. It was an excellent session and we’re looking forward to attending the next event soon – see you there!

Google has introduced the Google Font Directory and Google Font API, a free web service that allows website owners the ability to utilize other fonts outside of the Web-safe fonts cadre in an easy, convenient, and resource-efficient way.

The Google Font API is a fresh entry to the Font-as-Service niche that includes TypeKit, Typotheque, and others.

However there are limitations to it’s implementation. The Google Font API is compatible with the following browsers:

• Google Chrome: version 4.249.4+
• Mozilla Firefox: version: 3.5+
• Apple Safari: version 3.1+
• Opera: version 10.5+
• Microsoft Internet Explorer: version 6+

Dribbble, with three B’s, is a new site dedicated to allowing designers to show sneak peeks of their work whether it be websites, print work, applications, etc. It’s pretty simple. You make an account and then start uploading shots. You take a screenshot of your work at 400×300 px or less and upload it to Dribble. You tag the shot for easy referencing and categorization later on. You follow other Dribblers and their own shots. Then if you wish, you can respond to their shots with rebound shots and play off each other if you’d like. Or you can comment and “like” shots. There is a way to monitor the feedback on your shots and those you follow. It’s like a virtual crit session. I have yet to try it but it looks interesting for sure. Already some high profiled designers have signed up including Jason Santa Maria and Shaun Inman.

Remember the blessed days of Geocities when people, myself included, would sprinkle their newly made websites with all sorts of horrible animated monstrosities. The ever present “under construction” banner with the little man digging was a widely known classic. As a result, I feel like when you string the words ‘animated’ and ‘gif’ together people start to cringe just a little. Unless you are talking to a pre-teen who already owns an iPhone, iPad, doesn’t know what 8-track is and can’t comprehend the world without DVR. She wouldn’t know what the hell you are really talking about.

Matthew Cooper and Johnny Kelly are the brains behind I Am Not An Artist which started out with an initial 56 animated gifs and aims to grow into a space where other designers and creative types can participate by uploading their own gifs here. The project is an ongoing work in progress commissioned by the Elisava School of Design with concept, creative direction and design by Soon In Tokyo, a communications agency made up of former Elisava students and Teachers. The idea behind it all is to express that while designing can be fun there are a lot of frustrating, monotanous, and routine aspects to being a designer. PANTONE just released it’s new PLUS SERIES adding an astonishing 566 new colors to it’s current PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®. Within this new addition of colors they have added 224 new solid colors based off of the 14 Basic Color Inks. This brings the total of solid colors now to 1,341. They have also added 42 new neon colors and 300 new metallic colors. This brings the grand total of PANTONE colors to 5,024. A huge leap from when PANTONE first started making their color guides in 1963 when they only had 500 colors.

Per feedback from designers and such, PANTONE has re-arranged the color guides and chip books to group the color families. Over the years colors were added to the back of the book and things got a bit messy. Now the guides are arrange chromatically with a handy index to find colors since the color names and numbers have not been altered with this new arrangement.

PANTONE has also included a new ColorChecker® lighting indicator in all of it’s guides to help you determine if you are under the right lighting conditions to evaluate color. If the two bars of color on the strip don’t match then you must seek better lighting to ensure you are looking at your PANTONE guide in the most optimal of lighting situations. I think that’s just brilliant given that many times offices and such use crappy lighting that completely alters how colors look.

So just when you might start whining that the guides you spent so much money on are out of date, PANTONE wants to help you out. They have a trade in program to send back your old guides and get a rebate toward purchasing new ones. See details here.

The video above is a behind the scenes look at the development of the new colors and the reasoning behind extending the system. One interesting note is that the presses that PANTONE uses to create it’s guides and chip books can run 28 colors at a time. I always wondered about that considering there are so many distinct colors to print per guide. It would be a even more painstaking task to print if their printer couldn’t handle a large amount of colors. Apparently no other press in the world can print that many colors at a time. I think I might finally understand why PANTONE guides and books are so expensive. With over 5000 colors to print across all the materials, that’s a hell of a lot of press time even with 28 colors a pop.
