It is with great regret that I must admit I forgot my camera when traveling to Seattle for a recent trip. I underestimated the photo opportunities provided by this stunning city by the sea. Having been there for work meetings, I felt I had seen it all before. I was wrong. Seattle has grown up to be an amazing city flush with technology cash and visual innovators. The landscape is evolving and the interplay between natural and man-made is breathtaking. If you are looking for a reasonable getaway and want a visual feast filled with diversity get yourself to Seattle immediately. And, don’t forget your camera!

Below are some recommendations for seeing and experiencing all that is urban and natural in this sometimes overlooked modern city by the sea.

The legendary FUN Gallery of 80s New York which served as a starting point for Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat is back! Hosted by Patti Astor and Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd., The Return of the FUN Gallery presents a new generation of artists paying tribute to legendary art, music and scene of 1980s New York City. The show features works by original Fun Gallery artists Kenny Scharf, John Ahearn and graffiti legend Duro, as well as a new generation of artist including Ron English, Blaine Fontana, and Tuesday’ers Patrick Shipstad and Paula Tade. In addition, a wall dedicated to the history of the original Fun Gallery was on display featuring works by Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat among others.

During my years in art school I developed a love and appreciation for photography. Taking many photography classes as electives I learned how to use the manual settings on the camera and how to develop and print black and white film. All with an old Pentax, equipped with one 35mm lens. I absolutely loved this camera and would drag it along with me everywhere. Some of my fondest memories from school were wondering around the greater Los Angeles area, searching for interesting sights to capture. But very quickly graduation came, then work and I soon found myself getting out to shoot less and less. Eventually the camera ended up in the darker regions of my closet, and I began to settle for digital point and shoot cameras.

Julius Shulman had a keen eye, not just for the angles of the modern structures he photographed, but also for the spirit and life of the structure and everything surrounding it. Known for some of the most beautiful architecture photography  ever captured, Shulman provided visions of a magical era in Southern California of clean lines and poolside bliss.
